Fashion - Food - Finer Things (6)

Palm trees or pine trees, the roar of a fire or the hum of an air conditioner…ask anyone from the south about their plans for the holidays and chances are you’ll be met with a big smile. We southerners are bound by a shared love for family and traditions, and the holidays brings those together like no other time of the year!

SuthinGirl Jonnetta Patton

Jonnetta and I met a couple of months ago at a luncheon for a mutual girlfriend. I knew three people in the room when I arrived that day, but no matter because I soon found myself drawn into Jonnetta’s orbit, her energy and generous spirit an invisible force pulling me (and everyone else around her) in.

Jonnetta offers a hug and a smile (the real kind that crinkles the eyes) when you first meet. I swear if you look hard enough you can actually see the nurturing energy radiating from her. Her eyes are bright and curious. Her heart and mind are open.

I visited with her last week, and we had so much fun chatting about what it means to be from the south, her favorite holiday traditions and the importance of living in your purpose. Like-minded (and chatty) women that we are, our one-hour interview flowed into almost three as we spoke non stop about her passion for family, food and helping others.

J’s Kitchen Culinary Incubator

One of the things I admire most about Jonnetta is how she continued to devote herself to her family while building her storied career. She raised two wonderful sons and is the proud grandmother of three gorgeous grandchildren. For seventeen years, she managed the career of her son Usher, navigating the highly competitive world of the music industry. This on-the-job-training in business honed her into the sharp executive she is today, yet she remains incredibly intuitive and nurturing.

Helping others achieve success and live in their purpose.

This is Jonnetta’s passion and what pulled her out of an almost decade-long retirement. Helping others achieve their success and live in their purpose is the driving force behind J’s Kitchen Culinary Incubator, the state-of-the-art 2,100 square foot facility she created to furnish early-stage business support to culinary entrepreneurs in the Atlanta Metro area that she founded. Its mission is to provide a nurturing environment for serious culinary entrepreneurs of any type while offering affordable culinary business services necessary for long term success.

Success will come and go but integrity will stand forever.

Jonnetta Patton

Jonnetta is an inspiration for what can be. Living her purpose by blending her love of entertaining with her entrepreneurial spirit.

Traditions: ‘Tis the Season for Celebration, Food & Giving Back

It’s no surprise I loved this lady from the get go. A true SuthinGirl by way of Chattanooga, Tennessee, Jonnetta grew up in a wonderfully close family and learned early on the value of respect and positivity.

She continues her family’s tradition of bringing people together for big birthday and holiday celebrations, and gathering the people she loves around her dinner table. I asked this legendary hostess the question all we southern women are proud to answer: What dish are you known for? She smiled and without hesitation answered, Spicy Mac and Cheese! (For the record, I asked her to share her recipe but like a true southern belle, she wasn’t giving it up!!)

Several years ago, Jonnetta and and her family started a new holiday tradition: serving supper at Mary Hall Freedom House. This year, Jonnetta is once again giving her heart and her time to MHFH encouraging others to do the same.

She’s helping connect deserving mothers and children with sponsors to help make their holidays a little bit brighter.

What brings people of all walks of life, income levels, careers, zip codes and viewpoints together during the holidays? It’s not a tree, it’s not a present, it’s not a catchy song… it truly is food! And sadly, many people go without it during a season that is supposed to be joyous. That’s why the J’s Kitchen family is partnering with Mary Hall Freedom House to provide a Christmas dinner and presents for 10 special women and their children.

While we’ve got the cooking covered, please view the list of items requested by the women for their children. Your donation of a toy or clothes will help a local mother grant her child’s Christmas wish.

Jonnetta’s Holiday Wish:

Peace and happiness for her children and grandchildren, and everyone around her.

A big southern squeeze to everyone who joined us on Friday at SuthinGirl Presents Fashion, Food & Finer Things at the fabulous AC Hotel Atlanta Buckhead at Phipps Plaza!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We are a city of gracious and gorgeous people!

Sooooo many people came out to welcome the new hotel into our neighborhood! Thank you for making both the Luncheon and Cocktail Party events that will be long remembered.

The AC Hotel provided an incredibly chic setting for partygoers, and as we transitioned from daytime to evening, the sexy glow of the hotel created the perfect vibe for mingling and celebrating the start of the weekend.

Guests enjoyed private shopping at pop up shops created by Uncoded Era, Shaye Strager – Style Ambassador for India Hicks, Nicole Miller Atlanta, Alton Lane, Salacia Salts and Sandpiper.

SuthinGirl pampered her guests with interactive beauty experiences by Max Sanchez and his team from White Salon + Spa. Some got the ‘it braid’ from fashion week while others opted for a head full of loose waves.

There was a fun Balmain hair extension bar, decadent massage chair (the fellas were lined up for that!), a nail touch up station and an esthetician giving complimentary skincare consultations with premium samples from CosMedix.

The lovely ladies from NARS Boutique Atlanta made sure every girl had the perfect pout with their super popular Lippy Bar.

1Kept Kitchen & Bar treated our tastebuds to savory surprises all day: from pork meatballs to veggie empanadas, watermelon & feta flatbread to pimento cheese & bacon jam, truffled popcorn to grilled Yakatori chicken.

Decadent custom cupcakes by Create Your Cupcake and award-winning gingersnaps by Susansnaps provided the sweetest finishing touch on the evening.

The SuthinPeach

The mixologists at 1Kept created a special cocktail just for SuthinGirl: The SuthinPeach! Peach infused gin with prosecco. It’s sweet and bubbly, and guaranteed to make you smile.

I love art. Love love loooovvve art. I treasure the memories of a few shared moments with friends during each event enjoying some of the many beautiful original works by acclaimed local artists that were featured and offered for purchase by CSparkman’s Articurate.

Richie Nuzz and the band El Quattro entertained us during the evening Cocktail Party with their pop/hip hop blend. Talk about the perfect soundtrack for the event! Guests were treated to an exclusive performance of Richie’s new hit single, 3 Days.

CLICK HERE to listen to 3 Days

We heart our media sponsors, Modern Luxury’s Jezebel and The Atlantan magazines! Everyone went home with the latest issues and we look forward to sharing more photos from the events with you in their pages.

These goody bags were the best I’ve ever done, hands down. And I take a heck of a lot of pride in SuthinGirl goody bags, so that’s saying something. Thank you to all of our generous goody bag sponsors including Allqua Alkaline Water (the reason I felt so good the next morning) and YoToGo Greek Yogurt Holders!

Providing a give back opportunity at events is a long-standing SuthinGirl tradition, and makes for such a feel good. Thank you to the sponsors who donated over-the-top experiences and items to the Silent Auction to benefit Education Cures, and to guests who bid top dollar for them.

We are still tallying but it’s safe to say Education Cures was a big winner thanks to your generosity. I will post soon along with Katie Cyphers, founder of Education Cures, with an update on how much you raised and the immediate action that your dollars will provide for school age children in Sierra Leone!

I love the warm hugs, new connections, vibrant energy, positive feedback and creative inspiration I get from events like these. Trust me, I’m looking forward to the next one just as much as you are!

I read the best expression on my friend @LouiseJohnsonInteriors Instagram this morning. She called today “Slow-Down Sunday.” I love it! Isn’t that just exactly what we all need? To set aside time before for jumping into another big, busy week to reconnect…with ourselves, our family, our friends.

We Busy!

I am SO grateful. Like, pinch-me-this-can’t-be-happening grateful. SuthinGirl is bringing me opportunities I never dreamed of. I’ve officially joined the ranks of working moms, following my passion, showing my children that when you love what you do you’ll never work a day in your life, balancing keeping the homefires burning with pressing the SuthinGirl gas pedal…and you know what? It’s a wild and crazy ride, and I’m loving it. All of it! I’m hardly the only busy one in the family. Dean travels A LOT for work. Our three kids are each in different schools. Weekends are our sacred time to circle the wagons and focus on the family. Especially Sundays.

Slow-Down Sunday

I konked out last night before Dean and Caroline got home from one of their daddy/daughter dates and awoke to a sweet surprise: Krispy Kreme donuts!! So at this very moment, I’m writing to you in my pajamas, Dinka curled up asleep next to me, a hot cup of coffee and chocolate glazed donut on the bedside table. Dean is working quietly in the armchair next to me with an eye on his beloved Sunday NFL Countdown. I hear the kids up and stirring around in the kitchen, sounds of their fave TV show coming from the family room. It’s a rainy morning in Atlanta and still pretty dark outside for this time of day. Total nesting mode!

Last weekend we tried out the new Sunday Supper at Davio’s Atlanta inside Phipps Plaza.

It was a HIT!!!!! Yep, all caps with a long trail of exclamation points. The variety on the menu went over really well with everyone and the staff was cheerful and seemed to genuinely enjoy interacting with our kids. Ha! Here are some of my favorite moments from that night as shared on @SuthinGirl Instagram.

Woooohooo! Family dinner!! Headed to Davio’s for one of their fab prix fixe family Sunday Suppers featuring a different region of Italy every month. Tonight we’ll be exploring Friuli, Italy.

Familia! Feeling especially grateful. And full. Thank you, Davio’s Sunday Supper! You collected our iPhones when we sat down and, yeah, there was a stunned silence. But then guess what? Our kids talked and colored and laughed and even sang! We listened, we ate (oh boy, did we eat) and we looked at each other in the eyes. See you next week for another Davio’s Unplugged Sunday Supper!

Full tummies, happy mommy. Bring it on, Monday! Thanks to Davio’s we are reconnected and READY!

From July 3rd – September 25, take a tour of Italy at Davio’s Atlanta.

Each month we will showcase a different region of Italy and curate a special Sunday supper menu designed around the flavors and ingredients of the chosen region. This month we are featuring the Northern regions of Friuli.

Upon each guest’s first visit, you will be presented with a passport and will earn a stamp each time you dine with us and order the Sunday Supper Menu. (Each guest gets their own passport, only one stamp per visit). The guest with the most stamps at the end of September will receive a $150 gift card and a bottle of Davio’s wine!

What’s up buttercup? How’s 2016 treating you? Are you the kind of person that tucks in after the first of the year and enjoys some peace and quiet? Or do you fly out of the gate and throw yourself into work and the social scene with renewed vigor?

I think I’m more likely the latter with aspirations to be the former. I’ve started a new book and cleaned out my makeup drawer and a closet or two, but I’ve also scheduled lunches and date nights well into February. Girl, it’s just who I am. *wink

Regardless of how you get into the groove of a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect upon last year’s successes and lessons, and to set priorities for the year ahead. You know me, I’m not gonna ask you to do it if I’m not willing to do the same, so here goes:

From the Desk of SuthinGirl

Successes: Giving my best to being a mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend; Enjoying moments with family & friends; Launching SuthinGirl.

Lessons: Working from home means you have to set boundaries on your time. Too easily special time with family and friends can be impacted by the siren song of a laptop, to-do list and social media.

Priorities: Nurturing family and friendships; The Grand Refresh Project; Growing SuthinGirl.

Embarking upon SuthinGirl has been the second most glorious adventure of my lifetime, after motherhood. I delight in pouring my heart into every post, every creative nuance and every opportunity for learning. I feel humbled and thrilled to connect with so many SuthinGirl readers far and wide! I’m having a ball!

Talk about inspiration! The dynamic, fascinating people I meet through SuthinGirl keep me dreaming and growing every single day!

But, of course, I sometimes worry. Where are the boundaries between my priorities: work and family and self? In this age of connectivity, aren’t those lines forever shifting?

My goal in 2016 is to work smarter and design my ideal personal mix of priorities: family, work and self. Ivanka Trump, mother, wife, businessperson, entrepreneur AND my business girl crush, says it beautifully:

Women should be architecting the lives they want to live.

Instead of worrying about balance, Ivanka says she looks through the filter of “Is the life I’m leading consistent with my priorities?” Yes! Priorities, NOT balance! Gahhh! Total eureka moment! Let’s pinky promise each other that we will ask ourselves that question every day.

Like a lot of us, last week I finally eased back into my usual routine. I’m slowly catching up on sleep, reading a book I’ve had on my nightstand for at least two months and attending to the little beauty tasks like tweezing and face masks that slipped through the cracks as I got swept up in the magic of December. I thought you’d like a peek:

On those nights you choose to stay in to recharge, I recommend slathering on a mask, cracking a juicy book and serving yourself an indulgent (and healthy) little treat like Savannah Bee Company Whipped Honey on top of a Triscuit or sliced apple. There are four flavors from which to choose: Original, Lemon, Cinnamon and Passion Fruit. I love the combo of the tart Lemon flavor with the sweetness of an apple. Oh my yum yum.

Alrighty everybody, have a great rest of the week! See you soon! xx SuthinGirl

I take a lot of pride in how we do death in the South. From food to flowers to fashion, folks down here really know how to give a gracious send off.

Though it may appear effortless from the outside, it’s actually a domino effect of traditions that have been handed down from generation to generation. Some subtle, some not so much.

The loss of a close friend’s sweet mom last week got me thinking about these ties that bind and how comforting they are to all of us when someone we love passes away.

Send: A Handwritten Note

Without question, the first thing to do when you learn of someone’s passing is send the bereaved a handwritten note. Preferably on your personal stationery (I love mine and you can see it below), but in the absence of that any other stationery or sympathy card will do.

Personal stationery is like a signature fragrance. It speaks for you before you even say a word. Visit Love Letters for a gorgeous selection of paperie.

They Lived and Laughed and Loved and Left’ – James Joyce Sympathy Card $3.95

When my father passed away, the most unexpected and very appreciated gift we received was a bag full of paper towels, toilet paper, paper plates, plastic utensils and plastic cups. You have no idea how much people eat when they’re sad. Trust me, it’s a lot.

Wear: Black, but only if you want to.

My grandmother and my mother are both scions of the southern culture. So if they say it’s true, you can darn sure take it as gospel. And they both taught me that you do not have to wear black to a funeral. That being said,

I think every woman should invest in a go-to ‘funeral dress’ that can be used in a pinch for a less-formal wedding, job interview, holiday party, graduation, dinner at a fine restaurant or any other occasion that may come up unexpectedly.

Bring: Tomato Aspic

Food provides comfort during times of grief and there’s nothing like a Southern funeral to get the ladies into the kitchen in search of silver serving pieces and Saran Wrap. At visitations and after funerals, every inch of dining room tables are laden with casseroles and every tea sandwich imaginable. And always, always the venerable Southern staple: Tomato Aspic.

True confessions: I’m not a huge aspic fan. If you’ve never had it, well, it’s kind of like a V8 flavored Jello. But its mere presence on the table makes me feel better. This one from OKRA magazine is as good as it gets with a nice celery flavor and zippy tomato tang.

tomato aspic

Tomato Aspic

  • 5 ¾ cups (46 ounces) tomato juice

  • 3 packets unflavored gelatin

  • ½ medium onion, chopped

  • ½ cup chopped celery leaves

  • 2 Tablespoons Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 Tablespoon sugar

  • 1 teaspoon celery salt

  • 1 teaspoon salt

Lightly brush a 5-cup ring mold or equivalent individual molds with flavorless vegetable oil. This is a vital step – cooking spray doesn’t work well.

Place 2 cups of the tomato juice in a small bowl and stir in the gelatin to dissolve. Set aside.

Pour the remaining tomato juice into a large saucepan, add the remaining ingredients and stir to combine. Bring to a boil, then simmer reduce the heat, cover the pan and simmer for ten minutes.

Strain the juice into a bowl with a pouring spout. Press on the solids to release any juice then discard. Whisk in the reserved gelatin mixture until thoroughly combined. Carefully pour into the prepared ring mold, filling as full as possible.

Very carefully transfer the mold to the refrigerator. When the aspic has cooled, cover the mold with plastic wrap, then chill until firm, at least 8 hours or overnight.

Unmold the aspic onto an elegant tray, and surround with parsley. Serve with a dish of mayonnaise next to it on the table. (Which mayonnaise brand is the best is a heated and often divisive topic among southerners, but since this is my blog and I get to make the rules, I say Hellmann’s baby, all the way.)

Trust Me, You’ll Love It: November

Black Halo is one of my favorite brands because they emulate the details and silhouettes of couture designers. The dresses are classic in design, really well made and offered at a good price point…especially when they go on sale! Lookie here!

Dash some bitters on top of sugar cube. SuthinGirl loves orange bitters. Fee Brothers Bitters are to die for: Aztec Chocolate to Grapefruit to Rhubarb & everything in between!

Fill the glass with sparkling wine. Enjoy!

SuthinGirl Tipsy Tip: Look for four-packs of mini bottles of bubbly at your grocery store or liquor store. They’re the perfect portion for a few glasses at a time and will keep a larger bottle from going flat in the fridge.

Last week a group of my fave ladies and I celebrated our gorgeous girlfriend Camille’s birthday with a boozy lunch at the brand new Bar Margot inside Atlanta’s Four Seasons Hotel. From the moment our high heels stepped onto the plush carpeting, we were transported from the bustling of Midtown into a world of plush velvet, contemporary art, attentive service and culinary dreams come true.

This is a place where a flute of champagne magically appears in your hand, every need is anticipated and attended to with old school service and style, and the only hardship is deciding what to order off the incredible menu created by lengedary chef Ford Fry.

A very special thank you to manager Augusto Francisco and supervisor Wunjea Shin. You spoiled us rotten and we are definitely a group that encourages that kind of attention!

Bar Margot is buzzing, and I’m not just talking about the beehive on the 5th floor of the hotel where the restaurant sources its VERY local honey for treats like homemade honey-infused caramels. We will be back. And often. I can’t wait to share the sexy ambiance in the evening with my handsome foodie husband!

Indulge: Charlotte Tilbury Mini Miracle Eye Wand

Charlotte Tilbury ‘Mini Miracle Eye Wand’ Dynamic Duo Lift & Light Reflector $45

I don’t know if it’s the coffee or the wine or the lack of eight glasses of water a day–Oh, who am I kidding? It’s all of the above!–but somewhere along the way I’ve developed some shadows under these peepers. So when I read about this brand new product by my super fave Charlotte Tilbury, I was so excited that I couldn’t wait for it to be released in the United States!

I ordered my Mini Miracle Eye Wand from London a few weeks ago (of course I did!) and have been using it ever since it made the trip across the Atlantic and landed in my makeup bag. I love it! Total GAME CHANGER! Now that it’s being sold stateside, you need to give it a try!

Everything You Need to Know About the Mini Miracle Eye Wand

Create the appearance of eight hours of sleep in two clicks by covering dark circles and lines, smoothing out bags or hollows, brightening the eye contour and hydrating the skin’s surface for a dewy, luminous finish.

Click 1: The hydrating Eye Cream is enriched with specially tailored under-eye agents that make the skin feel firmer and tauter.

Click 2: Inspired by photographers’ silver light reflectors, the lightweight ultra-brilliant light reflector is packed with “a million lights” micro-particles that brighten shadows, conceal discoloration and diffuse the appearance of under-eye hollows.

Splurge: Chloé Plated-Heel Pumps

Chloé Plated-Heel Pumps $825

I swear to God, fall is here! It really, really is! And now that the rain has (finally) stopped, I’m wearing my new Iris colored Chloé pumps everywhere I go! They are gorgeous, unique and I love the gold detail at the heel!

Look around. Doesn’t it seem like everyone is wearing wedges? I tend to run in the opposite direction whenever I feel like something has become so popular that it’s part of an unspoken female “uniform.” So no surprise that I prefer these babies!

They’re a cross between wedge and pump, and I promise they’ll catch people’s eye and earn you a lot of compliments.

There’s a pair of booties with the same heel I’ve got on my wish list…Iris, Beige Rose and Black.

Chloé Plated-Heel Ankle Boots $995
