Skincare secrets are passed down between the generations of women in my family right alongside the antique silver tea service and my great-grandmother’s wedding rings. Does that show you how highly we prize gorgeous skin? I feel particularly qualified to help a sister out on the subject, having tried eveerrrrrryyything from Pond’s Cold Cream to Crème de la Mer.

Last spring, a friend introduced me to the founders of Sapelo Skin Care, Cindy Edwards and Stephanie Duttenhaver. A big time girl crush ensued. Cindy, Stephanie and I share passion for estate jewelry, the lowcountry and – of course – healthy and beautiful skin.

Sapelo Skin Care

Inspired by life in coastal Savannah, Sapelo Skin Care products mimic the twice-daily high tides, which bring life-sustaining nutrients and water to the environment.

Sapelo’s system relies on the 28-day cycle of skin cell renewal, so once a week for the next four weeks, I’ll post updates in my Diary. Today, my first impressions of the products I’m using and a little about the science behind the line.

Chasing the Tide: My Skincare Diary, Week 1

You betta believe I’m using this diary to kick my fanny into gear to make a very positive change in my skincare routine. My hope is that along the way, you’ll discover a new product or tip, too.

Q&A with SuthinGirl

SKIN TYPE: Dry with premature wrinkles. Fair skin, freckles and burns.

WORST HABIT: Not washing my face and moisturizing at night. (I know, I know.)

BEST ADVICE: This one came from my grandmother, Honey: treat your neck and décolletage with the same care you do your face. Don’t scrimp! Nothing gives away a woman’s age faster than a rough neck and wrinkly chest.

GOAL: Getting into the habit of washing and moisturizing my face before bedtime.

HOPES + DREAMS: Reduce and plump out surface lines around my eyes and mouth, add moisture and radiance to skin.

Morning Routine

Rosemary Face Wash

Smells exactly like you’ve rubbed fresh rosemary sprigs between your fingertips (which I love!) and left my face feeling clean but not dried out.

[Before washing with the Rosemary Face Wash, I relied on my tried-and-true Burt’s Bees Facial Cleansing Oil to remove my eye makeup since that’s a sensitive area and I was nervous about using something with so much fragrance around my eyes.]

Renewing Serum

Pat, pat, pat. Started on my forehead and moved down to my chin. Very fluid and went on watery. Dried in about 15 seconds and didn’t feel tacky.

Rejuvenating Cream

Lightweight cream that absorbed quickly. I applied to my face, neck and décolletage.

Softening Emollient

The best ever. With very dry skin and this was essential for me to feel fully moisturized. I love a dewey look, which this delivered without looking or feeling greasy. My makeup went on well on top and stayed on.

Sapelo Skin Care: The Science

Understanding the biological mechanisms of healthy skin rejuvenation, we developed a 3-Step, 28-day recovery system that gently hydrates, nourishes and improves skin quality on a cellular level to prevent premature aging and reduce signs of early aging.

Collaborating with a team of veteran cosmetic scientists and board-certified physicians, Sapelo Skin Care works by mimicking the skin’s immune system response to injury without actually creating an injury.

Our regimen includes five bioactive peptides that increase the production of collagen, elastin and hyaluronic acid by binding to and stimulating the transforming growth factor beta pathway (TGF-beta) at the basal cell layer. In addition, gardenia stem cells and plantago lanceolata leaf extract (derived from the plant stem cell culture) work together to increase skin cell density. The unique synergy of our exclusive blends speeds up skin cells’ metabolism and triggers new cell production.

A big southern squeeze to everyone who joined us on Friday at SuthinGirl Presents Fashion, Food & Finer Things at the fabulous AC Hotel Atlanta Buckhead at Phipps Plaza!

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

We are a city of gracious and gorgeous people!

Sooooo many people came out to welcome the new hotel into our neighborhood! Thank you for making both the Luncheon and Cocktail Party events that will be long remembered.

The AC Hotel provided an incredibly chic setting for partygoers, and as we transitioned from daytime to evening, the sexy glow of the hotel created the perfect vibe for mingling and celebrating the start of the weekend.

Guests enjoyed private shopping at pop up shops created by Uncoded Era, Shaye Strager – Style Ambassador for India Hicks, Nicole Miller Atlanta, Alton Lane, Salacia Salts and Sandpiper.

SuthinGirl pampered her guests with interactive beauty experiences by Max Sanchez and his team from White Salon + Spa. Some got the ‘it braid’ from fashion week while others opted for a head full of loose waves.

There was a fun Balmain hair extension bar, decadent massage chair (the fellas were lined up for that!), a nail touch up station and an esthetician giving complimentary skincare consultations with premium samples from CosMedix.

The lovely ladies from NARS Boutique Atlanta made sure every girl had the perfect pout with their super popular Lippy Bar.

1Kept Kitchen & Bar treated our tastebuds to savory surprises all day: from pork meatballs to veggie empanadas, watermelon & feta flatbread to pimento cheese & bacon jam, truffled popcorn to grilled Yakatori chicken.

Decadent custom cupcakes by Create Your Cupcake and award-winning gingersnaps by Susansnaps provided the sweetest finishing touch on the evening.

The SuthinPeach

The mixologists at 1Kept created a special cocktail just for SuthinGirl: The SuthinPeach! Peach infused gin with prosecco. It’s sweet and bubbly, and guaranteed to make you smile.

I love art. Love love loooovvve art. I treasure the memories of a few shared moments with friends during each event enjoying some of the many beautiful original works by acclaimed local artists that were featured and offered for purchase by CSparkman’s Articurate.

Richie Nuzz and the band El Quattro entertained us during the evening Cocktail Party with their pop/hip hop blend. Talk about the perfect soundtrack for the event! Guests were treated to an exclusive performance of Richie’s new hit single, 3 Days.

CLICK HERE to listen to 3 Days

We heart our media sponsors, Modern Luxury’s Jezebel and The Atlantan magazines! Everyone went home with the latest issues and we look forward to sharing more photos from the events with you in their pages.

These goody bags were the best I’ve ever done, hands down. And I take a heck of a lot of pride in SuthinGirl goody bags, so that’s saying something. Thank you to all of our generous goody bag sponsors including Allqua Alkaline Water (the reason I felt so good the next morning) and YoToGo Greek Yogurt Holders!

Providing a give back opportunity at events is a long-standing SuthinGirl tradition, and makes for such a feel good. Thank you to the sponsors who donated over-the-top experiences and items to the Silent Auction to benefit Education Cures, and to guests who bid top dollar for them.

We are still tallying but it’s safe to say Education Cures was a big winner thanks to your generosity. I will post soon along with Katie Cyphers, founder of Education Cures, with an update on how much you raised and the immediate action that your dollars will provide for school age children in Sierra Leone!

I love the warm hugs, new connections, vibrant energy, positive feedback and creative inspiration I get from events like these. Trust me, I’m looking forward to the next one just as much as you are!

Shirt and Bikini Bottoms by J.Crew, Sunscreen Oil by Supergoop, Floppy Sun Hat by White Elephant Designs, Sunnies by Prada.

After the Storm Comes Sunny Skies

Trust me…the LAST thing your SuthinGirl aspires to be is a storm chaser!! Right now, hurricane Hermine is blowing through Savannah and she needs to get a move on because this SuthinGirl has plans to spend the Labor Day holiday weekend with family at the beach on Tybee Island!

While my friends and fam wait out the winds and rain, I’m up here in Atlanta packing my bags in anticipation of the weekend’s sunshiny, breezy, cooler-than-average temps. It’s a metaphor for life, no? After the storm comes sunny skies!

Peek Inside SuthinGirl’s Beach Bag: New Goodies for Labor Day Weekend

Has anyone tried Supergoop Sun-Defying Sunscreen Oil yet?! As your resident fair-skinned sunscreen connoisseur, I’ve had maje tanning oil envy my whole life. If this goop works, that’s SPF 50 with a major moisturizing effect…so fingers crossed and you KNOW I’ll report back after the weekend!

This hat makes my heart go pitter pat!! I discovered White Elephant Designs Personalized Floppy Sun Hats on their Instagram and fell hard! All the fun of my “Wish You Were Here” sun hat by Eugenia Kim, but at a fraction of the price. Use code BLOWOUT30 for 30% off all hats at! Whatcha gonna get written on yours?

I love to read. Especially in bed at night on vacation. With all my travel this year I’ve constantly been on the hunt for new books, and recently found the perfect love story for a holiday weekend at the beach: The Invitation by Lucy Foley. Here’s the summary that got me hooked…

“An evocative love story set along the Italian Riviera about a group of charismatic stars who all have secrets and pasts they try desperately–and dangerously–to hide.

Rome, 1953: Hal, an itinerant journalist flailing in the post-war darkness, has come to the Eternal City to lose himself and to seek absolution for the thing that haunts him. One evening he finds himself on the steps of a palazzo, walking into a world of privilege and light. Here, on a rooftop above the city, he meets the mysterious Stella. Hal and Stella are from different worlds, but their connection is magnetic. Together, they escape the crowded party and imagine a different life, even if it’s just for a night. Yet Stella vanishes all too quickly, and Hal is certain their paths won’t cross again.

But a year later they are unexpectedly thrown together, after Hal receives an invitation he cannot resist. An Italian Contessa asks him to assist on a trip of a lifetime–acting as a reporter on a tremendous yacht, skimming its way along the Italian coast toward Cannes film festival, the most famous artists and movie stars of the day gathered to promote a new film.

Of all the luminaries aboard–an Italian ingenue, an American star, a reclusive director–only one holds Hal in thrall: Stella. And while each has a past that belies the gilded surface, Stella has the most to hide. As Hal’s obsession with Stella grows, he becomes determined to bring back the girl she once was, the girl who’s been confined to history.

An irresistibly entertaining and atmospheric novel set in some of the world’s most glamorous locales, The Invitation is a sultry love story about the ways in which the secrets of the past stay with us–no matter how much we try to escape them.” • Amazon

Alright, girls. These suitcases aren’t going to pack themselves (and for me the packing and anticipation is part of the fun) so, I’m off! I’ll be posting fashion, food and finer things all weekend from the beach on Instagram so come on over, see what’s new and say hello!

Stay safe and have fun!

What’s up buttercup? How’s 2016 treating you? Are you the kind of person that tucks in after the first of the year and enjoys some peace and quiet? Or do you fly out of the gate and throw yourself into work and the social scene with renewed vigor?

I think I’m more likely the latter with aspirations to be the former. I’ve started a new book and cleaned out my makeup drawer and a closet or two, but I’ve also scheduled lunches and date nights well into February. Girl, it’s just who I am. *wink

Regardless of how you get into the groove of a new year, it’s the perfect time to reflect upon last year’s successes and lessons, and to set priorities for the year ahead. You know me, I’m not gonna ask you to do it if I’m not willing to do the same, so here goes:

From the Desk of SuthinGirl

Successes: Giving my best to being a mom, wife, daughter, sister, friend; Enjoying moments with family & friends; Launching SuthinGirl.

Lessons: Working from home means you have to set boundaries on your time. Too easily special time with family and friends can be impacted by the siren song of a laptop, to-do list and social media.

Priorities: Nurturing family and friendships; The Grand Refresh Project; Growing SuthinGirl.

Embarking upon SuthinGirl has been the second most glorious adventure of my lifetime, after motherhood. I delight in pouring my heart into every post, every creative nuance and every opportunity for learning. I feel humbled and thrilled to connect with so many SuthinGirl readers far and wide! I’m having a ball!

Talk about inspiration! The dynamic, fascinating people I meet through SuthinGirl keep me dreaming and growing every single day!

But, of course, I sometimes worry. Where are the boundaries between my priorities: work and family and self? In this age of connectivity, aren’t those lines forever shifting?

My goal in 2016 is to work smarter and design my ideal personal mix of priorities: family, work and self. Ivanka Trump, mother, wife, businessperson, entrepreneur AND my business girl crush, says it beautifully:

Women should be architecting the lives they want to live.

Instead of worrying about balance, Ivanka says she looks through the filter of “Is the life I’m leading consistent with my priorities?” Yes! Priorities, NOT balance! Gahhh! Total eureka moment! Let’s pinky promise each other that we will ask ourselves that question every day.

Like a lot of us, last week I finally eased back into my usual routine. I’m slowly catching up on sleep, reading a book I’ve had on my nightstand for at least two months and attending to the little beauty tasks like tweezing and face masks that slipped through the cracks as I got swept up in the magic of December. I thought you’d like a peek:

On those nights you choose to stay in to recharge, I recommend slathering on a mask, cracking a juicy book and serving yourself an indulgent (and healthy) little treat like Savannah Bee Company Whipped Honey on top of a Triscuit or sliced apple. There are four flavors from which to choose: Original, Lemon, Cinnamon and Passion Fruit. I love the combo of the tart Lemon flavor with the sweetness of an apple. Oh my yum yum.

If I weren’t so delighted with my rainy day accessories I might be a teensy bit down about all the wet weather we’ve been having lately. But I’m not! I love splashing around town in my Le Chameau rain boots and popping open my cheery rose colored Burberry travel umbrella over my head.

I have a fabulous, globe-trotting aunt. She’s lived in London and New York and Berlin, and other places around the world where the weather can run to extremes. When I was in college and visiting her in Berlin, she and I set out on foot to sight see one wet, bitterly cold winter day.

I’ll never forget her motto: There’s no such thing as bad weather if you’re dressed well for the weather. Remember that and you’ll look fab and have fun wherever you go, come rain or shine!

SuthinGirls can still turn heads on a dreary day!

You can’t drink champagne without feeling a little spoiled! It’s impossible! This easy cocktail is an decadent departure from your usual glass of wine.

Champagne Cocktail aka ‘Chorus Girl’s Milk’

Place a sugar cube in the bottom of a champagne glass.

Dash some bitters on top of sugar cube. SuthinGirl loves orange bitters. Fee Brothers Bitters are to die for: Aztec Chocolate to Grapefruit to Rhubarb & everything in between!

Fill the glass with sparkling wine. Enjoy!

SuthinGirl Tipsy Tip: Look for four-packs of mini bottles of bubbly at your grocery store or liquor store. They’re the perfect portion for a few glasses at a time and will keep a larger bottle from going flat in the fridge.

Classic coupe bowls give bubbles a beautiful presentation!
